Schering-Plough: EU CHMP positive on Sugammadex

The European Union (EU) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) from the European Medicines Agency has issued a positive opinion on Sugammadex, Schering-Plough has announced.

According to the company, the body has recommended approval of the drug for routine reveral of the muscle relaxants vecuronium or rocuronium.

The CHMP opinion is based on a clinical trial programme, the firm states.

Dr Thomas P Koestler, executive vice-president and president of Schering-Plough, states that the product has the potential to modernise the use of anaesthesia around the globe.

“The data in the clinical trials demonstrate that sugammadex will give anaesthesiologists greater control over muscle relaxation, in a way that has never been available to us before,” comments Professor Rajinder Mirakhur from the Queen’s University of Belfast.

In recent days, Schering-Plough stated that around 60 clinical studies pertaining to its oncology compounds are to be presented at the 44th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, which concludes today (June 3rd).
