Schering-Plough vice-president retires

Schering-Plough’s vice-president James R Nelson has retired after more than 21 years working for the company.

He also served as the group’s senior patent advisor and offered executive and strategic advice on matters pertaining to intellectual property. This included offering input on the preparation, filing, prosecution and maintenance of patents and trademarks across Schering-Plough’s worldwide operations.

Dr Nelson retired on February 1st 2007 having joined as a patent attorney from a private practice in 1985. Numerous promotions saw him appointed to staff vice-president of patents and trademarks in 1994.

The former Schering-Plough vice-president holds a BA degree in chemistry, along with an MS degree in physical chemistry and a JD degree, all of which were obtained from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

“Jim Nelson has been the backbone of the patent and trademark organisation, building an exceptionally talented team,” said Thomas J Sabatino, executive vice-president and general counsel.

“Under his leadership, our patent group obtained thousands of patents and trademarks that protect the innovations and brand identity of Schering-Plough products around the world.”

The US-based pharmaceutical company was set up over 200 years ago as a subsidiary of German-based pharmaceutical and chemical company Schering AG, it was incorporated in New York in 1928.
