Schwarz reveals additional benefits of Parkinson’s patch

Schwarz Pharma has announced the publication of new clinical data concerning its Neupro patch for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease the Congress of the European Federation of Neurological Societies held in Glasgow this week.

Neupro, which was recently launched in the UK, can easily be transferred onto patients who have been treated with a dopamine agonist when they are going to bed, the trial demonstrated.

Additionally, the quality of sleep in patients using the Neupro patch was increased to a “clinically significant extent” as the drug reduces the number of sleep-related disturbances.

The phase III trial also found that the drug was not inferior to prampixone, while showing “favourable” increases in “on time” for patients, but without troublesome dyskinesia – results discussed by experts and Schwarz officials at the conference.

Schwarz was recently named by a Datamonitor report as an example of a mid-pharma company that specialises its operations into fields like cardiovascular disorders and central nervous system diseases. Lundbeck was named as a company similar in stature to Schwarz.

Last month, Altana, another German mid-pharma company, announced it had filed a lawsuit against Schwarz for an alleged patent infringement over the ulcer drug, pantoprazole.
