Scientists discover new cell type with role in cancer development
Scientists have discovered a new type of cell which could play a key role in understanding the development of cancers and the function of stem cell treatments.
Research by the Tufts University School of Arts and Sciences has identified "instructor cells" which can trigger alterations in the behaviour of other cells when a change in membrane voltage is applied.
By affecting the serotonin transport process in the body, these bioelectric signals can cause the descendants of stem cells to trigger melanoma-like growth in pigment cells.
According to the research team, this is an important breakthrough in the understanding of how electrical signals affect cell development, stem cell function and tumour growth.
Dr Michael Levin, professor of biology and director of the Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology at Tufts, said: "Ultimately it could enable us to guide cell behaviours toward regenerative medicine applications."
Earlier this month, the first ever official clinical trial of a stem cell therapy among human patients was initiated by biopharmaceutical company Geron.
