Selfie videos ‘can help people improve toothbrushing technique’
People could improve their oral health habits by recording videos of themselves as they brush their teeth.
This is according to a new study from Case Western Reserve University, which indicated that recording smartphone video selfies can make it easier for people to recognise problems with their brushing technique.
For this research, participants used smartphones propped on stands to film their brushing at home. An increase in the accuracy of their brush strokes and the number of strokes was seen, with an overall eight percent improvement in brushing skill.
It was suggested that the act of recording a video may in itself help to disrupt ingrained habits, making people conscious of their brushing habits and hastening the process of memory formation and association while creating new muscle memory.
Study co-author Lance Vernon, a senior instructor at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, said: "In the future, recording these selfies can help shift some of this time investment in improving brushing to technology. Patients can then receive feedback from dental professionals."
