Shimadzu launches high-end SPM-8000FM microscope

Shimadzu has announced the launch of its new SPM-8000FM high resolution scanning probe microscope, which offers a wide variety of advanced features and capabilities.

The device is equipped with a frequency modulation detection method and represents the manufacturer's new flagship model of scanning probe microscope. It is the first instrument capable of making ultra-high resolution surface observations comparable to those in a vacuum, even in air or in liquid.

It enables observations of hydration and solvation at the interface of liquids and solids and can be used with samples such as thin films, crystals, semiconductors and organic samples.

Developed by Shimadzu in cooperation with Kyoto University and other universities, the SPM-8000FM can be used to observe structural changes occurring at the interface of electrodes and electrolytes in lithium ion batteries, as well as analysing lipids and other organic molecules in liquids.

The company stated: "Such observations are expected to lead to new opportunities in research and development in a number of nanotechnology fields, including electronic devices, nanomaterials, catalysts and biomaterials."
