Shire adopts open-access policy for publication of future research

Shire has announced the introduction of a new open-access publication policy that will apply to all future Shire-supported research.

In future, all manuscripts pertaining to Shire-affiliated research will be submitted to journals that offer public availability via open access, meaning the public will be able to obtain free, unrestricted and prompt online access to Shire's research.

Pharmaceutical companies currently fund around 60 percent of all medical research, but the industry as a whole has been slow to adopt open-access policies, a trend that Shire hopes to buck with its new approach.

It is hoped that sharing clinical trial data with patients, healthcare providers, researchers and the public can help to improve public confidence in medicine and ensure that all stakeholders are able to make better healthcare decisions.

Christopher Rains, head of global medical affairs for medical shared services at Shire, said: "Shire's new open-access policy builds on our commitment to transparency and reflects our dedication to helping patients by allowing everyone to freely access and learn from our research findings."
