Shire announces new Fosrenol data analysis

Shire has published analysis of research investigating Fosrenol (lanthanum carbonate) compared to standard treatment for renal health in patients with end-stage retinal disease.

The data collected over two years shows that those administered Fosrenol achieved similar phosphate control to those treated with conventional therapies with lower serum calcium levels.

According to the research, 50 per cent of patients treated with standard therapy displayed progression away from the normal range of bone volume, compared to 31 per cent of those treated with Fosrenol.

Additionally, those treated with standard therapy showed a 24 and 12 per cent improvement in bone formation measured at one and two years, while those patients treated with Fosrenol showed a 38 per cent increase in bone formation and both one and two years.

Professor Hartmut Malluche, lead investigator of the study, said: “These data show that Fosrenol not only effectively controls hyperphosphataemia, but also demonstrates some positive effects on bone status compared with standard therapy over the two year study period.”

Earlier this year, Shire announced the results of research showing that treatment with Fosreonol resulted in a reduction in phosphate levels in patients on dialysis currently being treated with monotherapies or combined phosphate binders.

Fosrenol was first launched in Europe in the latter half of 2005.
