Shire discusses potential Fabry treatment for women

Shire’s business unit has asserted women with signs and symptoms of Fabry disease should be considered for enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with agalsidase alfa.

The company’s Human Genetic Therapies division made this remark after studies found this form of treatment could be beneficial for some females with the medical condition.

Improvements in cardiac structure, reduction in pain and stabilisation of kidney function were all positive outcomes noted during investigations.

However, the company commented its findings may not be reflective of all women with the illness.

Co-author of the study Professor Christoph Kampmann stated meaningful and measureable data has been generated from the research.

“Our study calls attention to the fact that ? women may experience a similar impact from Fabry disease [to men] and may benefit from long-term treatment with agalsidase alfa,” he said.

The examination was the largest and longest of its kind looking into ERT in females with the illness and has been published in the Genetics in Medicine journal.
