Shire reports positive data from von Willebrand disease drug trial

Shire has announced new phase III clinical trial data that highlights the strong performance of Vonvendi, its new treatment for von Willebrand disease.

The study met its primary endpoint by showing that Vonvendi was able to effectively control bleeding and blood loss during an operation in adults with severe von Willebrand disease undergoing major, minor and oral elective surgical procedures.

Vonvendi is an on-demand recombinant treatment that works by replacing von Willebrand factor in the blood. This is one of several types of protein that are needed to facilitate proper blood clotting, and is missing in patients with this disease.

Results from this trial will be used to support Shire's efforts to secure regulatory approval for this new drug in Europe and other markets globally in 2017.

Shire is also currently studying the performance of Vonvendi in prophylactic and paediatric indications.
