Shire research highlights underestimated global haemophilia burden

Shire has announced the findings of a new study indicating the significant unmet needs that exist in the global haemophilia community.

The company has presented its new estimate of the Global Annual Bleed Rate, with the aim of identifying regions of the world with the greatest need for improved diagnosis and access to approved treatment options for the condition.

Initial findings from the GABR research suggested that the incidence of haemophilia may be more than three times greater than current estimates, with a bleeding episode occurring every three to 15 seconds worldwide.

This finding supports existing data showing that at present, only 25 percent of people living with haemophilia receive adequate treatment for the disease.

Dr Leonard Valentino, global head of haematology medical affairs at Shire, said: "As the global leader in rare haematology, Shire is committed to innovative research on behalf of this community to help us focus efforts on improving care for patients."

These initial figures were presented at the annual congress of the European Association for Haemophilia and Allied Disorders, with more comprehensive findings to be published later this year.
