Siemens and Insightec announce new MRI-focused collaboration

Siemens Healthineers has announced a new partnership with Insightec, a leading provider of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided focused ultrasound therapy.

The collaboration will focus on the development of compatibility between the Exablate Neuro system and Siemens' leading 1.5T and 3T clinical MRI systems, Magnetom Aera and Skyra. Both parties will work to provide access to Exablate Neuro for their installed customer base, as well as new clients.

Exablate Neuro is the world's first device for non-invasive application of MRI-guided focused ultrasound to be approved in the US and EU for the treatment of essential tremors and other conditions.

It uses focused ultrasound waves to precisely target and accurately ablate tissue deep within the brain without the need for incisions, and while minimising damage to adjacent healthy tissue.

Dr Christoph Zindel, senior vice-president and general manager of Siemens Healthineers' magnetic resonance business, said: "This strategic partnership of two leading organisations is exciting and further underlines Siemens Healthineers' strategy of enabling better patient outcomes by broadening its diagnostic imaging portfolio into advanced therapies in the area of neurological and other disorders."

Clinical research, development and regulatory approvals for Exablate Neuro are ongoing for additional neurosurgical applications and markets.
