Siemens digital mammography approved for mobile use
Siemens Medical Solutions has revealed that the FDA has approved their Mammomat Novation(DR) system for mobile use, meaning that physicians can now employ the device in a coach to perform mammograms in remote areas.
The Mammomat Novation(DR) utilises digital mammography technology, which includes digital screening, diagnosis and stereotactic biopsy capabilities. Siemens says the system directly converts x-ray information into digital information for increased accuracy. It is designed to work with MammoReport(Plus), a workstation system which can offer users the ability to switch between eight-view mammogram charts within seconds and use third-party CAD markers.
Diane Livengood, director of women’s health at Siemens Medical Solutions, said: “Now our customers can use the Mammomat Novation(DR) system in a mobile environment to reach more patients with one of the best mammography solutions available.”
“This is especially important in improving access for women who may have difficulty traveling to an imaging facility that offers digital mammography,” she added.
Siemens employs approximately 21,000 people in the UK and it provides MRI and multi-slice CT scanners for the NHS. It is also the largest provider of hearing aids in the NHS.
In the UK, the standard mammogram is two-view, meaning that two images are taken from different angles to ensure nothing is missed. The NHS provides a breast screening programme for women aged between 50 and 70. Cancer Research UK estimates that seven out of eight women called back for more tests after a mammogram turn out to be fine.
