Siemens Healthineers launches new detection kits for high-risk HPV strains

Siemens Healthineers has announced the launch of a new range of human papillomavirus (HPV) tests, designed to aid the detection of high-risk strains.

Created by its subsidiary Fast Track Diagnostics, the new real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcription PCR kits amplify DNA and RNA from laboratory samples, allowing clinicians to diagnose infections rapidly.

It can be used to detect HPV 16, HPV 18 and a pool of 12 other high-risk subtypes, including an endogenous control. These subtypes are responsible for nearly all cervical cancers, with HPV type 16 and 18 accounting for over 70 percent of cases between them.

The new assay is based on multiplex real-time PCR technology, and has now received CE Mark approval for sale in Europe.
