Siemens Healthineers staffers nominated for 2017 Inventor Award

Siemens Healthineers has congratulated two of its employees for securing nominations for the 2017 Inventor Award.

Haematology product manager Jan van den Boogaart and cell diagnostics researcher Professor Dr Oliver Hayden have been named as finalists in the industry category for creating a new means of detecting malaria.

The automated method was developed through their own research and leverages the capabilities of the Siemens Healthineers Advia 2120i haematology system, which can run malaria tests automatically as part of a full blood panel.

Current malaria diagnosis methods, such as microscopic examination, involve relatively time-consuming, complicated and expensive procedures, but this new approach offers high throughput at a lower cost.

Professor Dr Hayden said: "Jan and I are driven by the idea of developing affordable technologies that can influence the improvement of health conditions for billions of people. Infection diagnostics from blood panels prepared by automation has great potential for routine clinical use."

The winners of the 2017 Inventor Award will be announced in Venice on June 15th.
