Sigma-Aldrich’s takeover by Merck KGaA approved by US regulators

29th December 2014

Sigma-Aldrich has announced that its imminent acquisition by the German Merck KGaA group has been approved by US regulators.

The waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act in connection with the acquisition expired on December 22nd 2014, meaning the deal has now received US antitrust clearance.

Although the takeover remains subject to certain other conditions – including regulatory approval in additional territories – it has already been ratified by Sigma-Aldrich shareholders and is expected to close in mid-2015.

The acquisition was first announced in September 2014 following the agreement of a deal worth $17 billion (10.93 billion pounds). The takeover is expected to create one of the leading players in the global life science industry.

Following the finalisation of the purchase, Merck KGaA will be able to greatly expand the reach of its Merck Millipore business in North America and Asia, while Sigma-Aldrich's US presence in St Louis and Billerica will be maintained.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801767772-ADNFCR
