Smith and Nephew agrees distribution deal for MolecuLight i:X device

Smith and Nephew has agreed a deal with imaging technology company MolecuLight for an innovative device for the clinical assessment of wounds.

The agreement will see Smith and Nephew assist with the commercialisation of MolecuLight i:X , a handheld point-of-care imaging device that uses fluorescence imaging to display potentially harmful concentrations of bacteria.

Signs of bacterial infection will fluoresce in violet light on screen in real-time, allowing clinicians to capture and view still images and video, as well as measuring the surface area of the wound, before adding the images to electronic health records.

It helps users to select the right therapy for patients, as well as guiding wound sampling and debridement and the monitoring of wound progression.

MolecuLight i:X is currently available in Canada and the EU, with regulatory clearance in the US still pending.

Dr Andy Weymann, chief medical officer at Smith and Nephew, said: "The MolecuLight i:X imaging device enables healthcare professionals to see what they have never been able to see before: the actual accumulation of several common bacteria in a wound, even when not visible to the naked eye."
