Smith and Nephew opens new Costa Rica manufacturing facility

Smith and Nephew has announced the launch of its new Costa Rica manufacturing facility for sports medicine orthopaedic devices in Coyol Free Zone, Alajuela.

The British firm has spent $55 million (45.12 million pounds) developing the new site, with 250 jobs to be created as a result. This brings the company's Costa Rican workforce up to 1,950.

The new plant will primarily be used to support global demand for Smith and Nephew's Coblation technology, an arthroscopic procedure that involves the creation and application of an energy field for the precise removal of soft tissue.

Olivier Bohuon, chief executive officer of Smith and Nephew, said: "We are proud to open this new facility in Costa Rica, which, alongside our established sites in the US, gives us the state-of-the-art manufacturing platform that will support our ambition to expand our pioneering sports medicine business."

The firm reinforced its position in the global sports medicine market with the acquisition of ArthroCare in 2014, a deal that added complementary products to its existing portfolio, as well as broadening its manufacturing expertise in Costa Rica.
