Smith and Nephew purchases Kalypto Medical
Smith and Nephew has closed the acquisition of Kalypto Medical, a specialist developer of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) devices, for an undisclosed fee.
The newly purchased business has been investing in NPWT technology since 2006 and is best known as the manufacturer of the portable ambulatory NPD 1000 system.
By acquiring the firm, Smith and Nephew is adding to its own innovation pipeline and intellectual property portfolio in this market, having entered the field itself nearly five years ago.
Kalypto's products will complement its own market-disrupting offerings such as Renasys and Pico, helping it to deliver a wider range of solutions to patients worldwide.
Robin Carlstein, senior vice-president at Smith and Nephew's advanced wound management division, said: "The acquisition of Kalypto Medical is in alignment with our strategy to bring ever more innovation to this important market, continuing our drive to reduce the human and economic cost of wounds."
Last month, the company announced the launch of its new Healicoil PK suture anchor, for use in rotator cuff repair applications.
