Smith and Nephew welcomes new WHO recommendation for NPWT

Smith and Nephew has responded positively to new guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO) endorsing the benefits of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT).

The global guidelines, designed to outline strategies to reduce rates of surgical site infections (SSIs), addressed a total of 27 separate topics, including a recommendation for the use of prophylactic NPWT in adult patients on primarily closed surgical incisions in high-risk wounds.

The guidelines also call for the adoption of more portable devices by healthcare providers to ensure the use of NPWT does not contribute to prolonged hospital stays.

Smith and Nephew has welcomed the WHO guidance as a positive development for healthcare providers and patients. The company is the manufacturer of Pico, a single-use NPWT system that has been shown to help reduce surgical site complications.
