Smith and Nephew’s Pico wound therapy earns praise from clinical experts

Smith and Nephew has highlighted the growing body of evidence showing the benefits its Pico single-use negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) can offer in avoiding postoperative wound complications.

The firm recently held a meeting in Paris at which more than 160 European experts in plastic and oncoplastic surgery met to discuss new data and share the latest evidence-based best practice around the use of Pico in preventing incisional complications following breast surgery.

A recent multicentre study involving 200 bilateral breast reduction patients was presented to delegates, showing significantly fewer wound healing complications associated with Pico compared to standard care, as well as a 38 percent relative reduction in surgical dehiscence by day 21.

This study also evaluated the scar quality at 42 and 90 days post-surgery, with Pico showing significantly better scar quality at each interval.

Jennifer Rusby, a consultant oncoplastic surgeon at the Royal Marsden hospital in London, said: "Preventing a wound complication following a mastectomy or lumpectomy is crucial. Even a minor complication can delay radiotherapy or chemotherapy, and can potentially have devastating consequences."
