Smiths launches cuff pressure controller for endotracheal tubes

Smiths Medical, the UK-based medical devices company, yesterday launched its PressureEasy cuff pressure controller for endotracheal tubes.

The new product is designed to eliminate the need for manometers to measure endotracheal tube cuff pressure, which are prone to contamination and can be expensive, as well as “burdensome”, according to the manufacturer.

Smiths claims that the device is the only one of its kind and reduces infection, in addition to having to recalibrate and replace manometers.

Jim Cobb, director of marketing for respiratory products at Smiths Medical, said the new technology sets the company apart from its competitors in the respiratory medical device market.

He said: “As a global leader in the manufacture of respiratory products, Smiths Medical is proud to devise a safe, cost-effective alternative to manometer use.”

“This novel instrument enhances patient care and is easier and more convenient to use than the current method,” he added.

Earlier this month, Smiths Medical reported a 31 per cent increase in sales, compared to last year’s figures. The company cited the improved uptake in its single-use medical devices.

In addition, spending on research and development more than doubled over the year.
