SonoSite reveals deep needle insertion visualisation technology

SonoSite is launching new imaging technology which is designed to make it easer for clinicians to access visual data when conducting deep needle insertions.

The medical device firm’s new Enhanced Needle Visualization system is an ultrasound-based technology which functions with the SonoSite M-Turbo and S Series product lines.

It enhances the on-screen brightness of the needle when it is approaching a deep target from a steep angle, an application in which imaging is traditionally difficult, resulting in what is known as “lost needle phenomenon”.

Kevin Goodwin, SonoSite’s president and chief executive officer, said the new technology has been met with an enthusiastic response from professionals in the marketplace.

He added: “Physicians have commented that this technology will become the new industry standard for needle visualisation.”

Earlier this month, SonoSite completed its takeover of the micro-ultrasound technology specialist VisualSonics, a deal which will allow the firm to expand its presence in the pre-clinical and clinical point-of-care markets.
