South-east smokers being encouraged to quit

4th March 2009

Smokers in the south-west are being encouraged to join millions of others across the UK to stub out the cigarettes, the Department of Health (DoH) has reported.

Across the region on March 11th, which is No Smoking Day, there will be many events taking place including a customised double-decker bus and interactive stalls in shopping centres.

GPs will also be on hand to offer help, support and advice for those wishing to quit.

Fiona Andrews, from Smokefree south-west, explained that people are more likely to succeed in giving up a tobacco habit if they seek assistance from the NHS.

She commented: “With over 1,000 access points to services in the south-west, there is always free help and support nearby to help people to quit permanently.”

A person who quits lighting up 20 cigarettes a day could save over £170 a month, which equates to more than £2,100 a year, Ms Andrews noted.

She concluded that, due to the credit crunch, it was no surprise more smokers were trying to give up.

Last month, the DoH launched a campaign telling parents that their children worried about their tobacco habit.
