Stryker’s Trevo Retriever shows stroke treatment benefits in new trial

Stryker's Trevo ProVue Retriever has been utilised in a new study that has demonstrated the benefits of intra-arterial treatment for stroke patients.

Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the study was able to demonstrate that using intra-arterial treatment to remove stroke-causing blood clots from large vessels supplying blood to the brain provides better outcomes than using a clot-busting drug alone.

Moreover, the Trevo ProVue Retriever – the only device on the market designed to allow physicians to visualise blood clot interaction – was shown to deliver substantial improvements, particularly when compared to older embolectomy devices.

Whereas current standard treatment resulted in good outcomes only 19 percent of the time, using the newest generation of stent retrievers in conjunction with clot-busting drugs was almost twice as likely to result in a good outcome.

Mark Paul, president of Stryker's neurovascular division, said: "We are one step closer to winning the battle against stroke and we are incredibly proud that the Trevo Retriever is playing an instrumental role."

This comes after the Trevo Retriever was presented with the Prix Galien USA 2014 Award for best medical technology last month.
