Study shows omega-3 can protect against osteoarthritis

19th October 2011

Omega-3 nutrients in fish oil could offer significant benefits in the prevention or treatment of osteoarthritis, according to a new study.

The University of Bristol has conducted research among guinea pigs showing that omega-3 rich diets can help to reduce rates of the disease by around 50 percent compared to a normal diet.

Typical early signs of the condition, such as degradation of collagen and the reduction of shock absorption in cartilage, were shown to be reduced by omega-3, thus scientifically confirming the benefits of the substance on joint health.

Researchers said this shows the important role the nutrient could play in combating and treating the disease, particularly when consumed in fish oil rather than flax oil form.

Lead researcher Dr John Tarlton said it may also "positively contribute to a range of other health problems such as heart disease and colitis".

Earlier this year, the American Heart Association highlighted a study showing that omega-3 can help to prevent artery disease and heart attacks for patients with stents.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800763549-ADNFCR
