Study shows the benefits of electric tooth brushes

11th September 2019

A long term study examining potential links between brushing with an electronic toothbrush and oral health involved 2,819 adults from the Study of Health in Pomerania, who were examined between 2002 and 2006, with follow-ups after 6 and 11 years. At the start of the study, 18% participants used an electric toothbrush, and at the 11-year follow-up that figure had increased to 37%. Those who used an electric toothbrush had 20% less tooth loss during follow-up than those using a manual toothbrush, with slightly better results recorded in those participants who used an electric toothbrush at least twice a day compared with those who used a manual one.
The study found that the association between electric tooth brushing and tooth retention was significant only in those with mild periodontitis or none at all, and that electric tooth brushing was linked with fewer pockets and better attachment of teeth to the gums and bone.
Dr Vinay Pitchika, author of the study, said: “Electric toothbrushes have become increasingly popular among all age groups in Germany, but few studies have tested their long-term effectiveness. Our study shows electric toothbrushes are most beneficial in maintaining good oral health and are linked with slower progression of periodontal disease.”
