Since an increase in availability to veterinary care, cost has become the largest factor in preventing pet owners utilizing animal health services, according to a survey conducted by Cats Protection.

The organization showed findings from another study, revealing just over 50% of animal health professionals were concerned about the possibility of demand increase. Furthermore, concerns were raised over a lack of vets to cater to the volume of pets.

Alison Richards, chief of clinical services stressed, “Access to veterinary care is fundamental to the work of charities like Cats Protection, and the veterinary workforce is instrumental in ensuring cat welfare.”

According to the charity, the number of owners surrendering their cats due to money constraints increased by almost 50% between the months of January to May 2023 when compared to the same time the previous year.

The report also expresses concern that, with 3% of guardians acknowledging they have contemplated relinquishing their companion animals in the last year, just over 300,000 cats may need relocating.

Cats Protection commented, “This year’s report data suggests that these concerns about the cost of living are having the tangible effect of preventing cats from entering or remaining within loving homes.
