Survey Reveals the Deteriorating Mental Health of Dentists in the UK
Over 50% of dentists polled for a survey in Wales said working for the NHS was “very stressful” or “extremely stressful.” Two-fifths of respondents expressed that they wanted to cut back on their NHS duties in the coming year.
Well over 40% claimed they felt “extremely stressed” regarding the economic status of their clinic.
Almost 80% of those in Urgent Dental Care have described their standard of sleep as “bad” or “very bad”.
Three-quarters expressed their worries about the mounting patient backlogs.
The findings have prompted another round of research focusing on how personal protective equipment impacts the mental wellbeing of dentists, with particular emphasis in dentists going through menopause.
The outcome of the study proved that “if the working conditions for dentists during the pandemic continue to go unchanged, dentists’ mental wellbeing is likely to erode; the results of which would be devastating. Without significant improvements to the working conditions of dentists, as well as continued psychological support, large-scale burnout in the future is not only possible, but likely.”
