Takeda and Maverick Therapeutics announce T-cell engagement therapy research

Takeda has announced a new collaboration with Maverick Therapeutics on the development of new T-cell engagement therapies for the treatment of cancer.

The alliance will focus on the development of Maverick's T-cell engagement platform, which was created specifically to improve the utility of T-cell redirection therapy for the treatment of cancer.

A $125 million (102.31 million pounds) funding package has been agreed, including an upfront option, equity and research and development payments. Takeda has an exclusive right to purchase Maverick after five years for an undisclosed sum.

Takeda will add a director to Maverick's board as part of this agreement, with the management team of Maverick to continue to be led by president and chief scientific officer Dr Hans-Peter Gerber.

Phil Rowlands, interim head of Takeda's oncology therapeutic area unit, said: "Working together with Maverick will enable us to leverage a potentially groundbreaking biologics platform to support Takeda's goal of developing innovative, targeted therapies to treat people with cancer."

This comes after the company expanded its oncology market presence further earlier this month by agreeing a deal to purchase Ariad Pharmaceuticals.
