Takeda receives CHMP backing for kidney disease drug Rienso

26th April 2012

Takeda has been granted a recommendation for European approval of Rienso, its new therapy for chronic kidney disease patients.

The European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has issued a positive opinion on Rienso being approved for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia among adult kidney disease patients.

Developed alongside AMAG Pharmaceuticals, the ferumoxytol-based treatment is an intravenous iron therapy that has demonstrated its safety and efficacy performance in three pivotal phase III trials.

The treatment has already been approved for use in the US and Canada, where it is sold under the name Feraheme.

Trevor Smith, head of commercial operations for Europe and Canada at Takeda Pharmaceuticals, said: "This positive CHMP opinion marks an important step forwards for ferumoxytol. Takeda are looking forward to making this valuable new therapeutic option available to clinicians."

Earlier this week, the company announced a new collaboration with Metabolon that will focus on the development of new therapeutic targets and biomarkers for various applications.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801349848-ADNFCR
