Teva launches generic Irbesartan tablets in UK

Teva has announced the UK launch of generic Irbesartan tablets, a new therapy for the treatment of essential hypertension and renal disease in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The new product is an off-label version of the branded drug Aprovel from Sanofi Pharma Bristol-Myers Squibb SNC and is approved for use as part of an antihypertensive medicinal product regimen.

Launching under the company's award-winning Teva 360 livery, the therapy is available now and will be sold in a number of different strength options.

Teva has now introduced 22 products this year, a total of 11 of which were day one patent expiries.

Kim Innes, commercial director at Teva, said: "It's good for pharmacy because patent expiries provide them with the opportunities for increasing margins … But importantly, it also means that we continue to help save the NHS over nine billion pounds a year."

Last month, the company published its financial results for the second quarter of 2012, during which it experienced a 19 percent year-on-year increase in sales.
