Texan Team of Vets Use 3D Printing for Dogs Hip Operation
Ella Jackson
A team of vets in Texas recently executed a difficult double hip replacement surgery. The operation was made possible by a 3D-printed copy of the dog’s hip joints.
After a decade of hip issues and 2 previous operations involving double hip replacements, a Labrador mix named Ava was the receiver of the 3D-printed hip replacement.
Using CT scanning, a highly accurate replica of the Labradors hip joints was first constructed. Then, the bone templates were 3D printed into a model that allowed surgeons to examine and lay out a process for the procedure.
Dr Brian Saunders comments, “Basically, we printed a replica of Ava’s dislocated hip joint and planned exactly how to perform the revision operation using the 3D bone models. In fact, we sterilized the plastic models and used them in the operating room to help guide the revision surgery.”
He continued by saying, “Planning using 3D models and collaborating with the Soft Tissue team were two huge contributing factors to our success.”
Thanks to the Texas veterinary team’s persistent hard work, the Labrador Retriever is on the road to recovery and back to her regularly scheduled play.
