As the globe is set to hit the 1.5C global warming limit within the coming two decades, flooding, heatwaves and droughts will be more intense and frequent, a landmark United Nations review has forecasted.

The milestone scientific assessment highlights the rate of warming in the past 2,000 years has been extraordinary, and it’s clear that human influence has made the globe hotter and has already been responsible for 1.1C of global warming since 1850.

Antonio Guterres, UN secretary-general, outlined the findings as a “code red for humanity.”

Furthermore, the report discovered that even in the best-case scenario, the accepted 1.5C limit will be met, which will cause more regular extreme weather events.

In addition, the report warns that some changes, such as sea-level rise, is locked into our systems.

UN environment programme chief, who unveiled the report, Inger Andersen, stated: “Nobody’s safe and it’s getting worse faster. We must treat climate change as an immediate threat.”

Climate science professor, Reading University, Ed Hawkins, stated: “The consequences get worse and worse and worse as we get warmer and warmer. And so every tonne of CO2 matters and every bit of warming matters.”
