The NHS ‘needs to focus on the elderly’

The NHS must place a greater emphasis on care for the elderly.

This is according to health secretary Jeremy Hunt, who has called on staff in the health service to become the best carers in the world with regard to older patients.

Mr Hunt made the comments during his speech at the Conservative Party conference and he promised the culture of the NHS will be improved going forward.

The politician explained there are currently more pensioners than children – the first time this has been the case – but warned: "The system continues to treat older patients as a surprise, at best, or unwelcome at worst."

It was noted that reforms would not only look at addressing conditions such as dementia, rather it would seek to improve the way the NHS cares for its patients.

Mr Hunt went on to praise a number of unsung heroes at the health service, although he also claimed the organisation is honest about any mistakes it makes.
