The University of Nottingham have developed fully approved PPE face guards

A group of engineers from the University of Nottingham have developed and manufactured a fully approved PPE face shield for healthcare workers on the front line, battling COVID-19. The engineers have already produced 1000 face shields, with intentions of developing 10,000 units altogether, which they’ll deliver to Nottingham healthcare workers after each batch has been made.

The shield consists of a laser-cut PET visor with anti-fog coating, a 3D printed headband and a laser-cut strap which can be adjusted. The guard, which builds on HP’s headband design, incorporates a cover at the top of the face shield, preventing fluid from entering the eyes. The engineers have made multiple alterations to the face mask, including making the wrap-around visor element more large-scale and enhancing comfort, so that the British Standards Institution could pass it.

Joint Clinical Chair, NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire CCG, as well as Local GP, Dr James Hopkinson, stated: “We are extremely grateful to the University of Nottingham for developing and supplying the visors which will make a real difference to thousands of healthcare staff working on the frontline of the coronavirus outbreak. Packs of the face shields have already been delivered to local GP practices and we have plans in place to share them with a range of other key workers such as people who care for others at home.”
