Thermo Fisher Launches Multiskan Ease Microplate Reader
Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched the Multiskan Ease Absorbance Microplate Reader, a compact single-mode instrument designed to support routine laboratory workflows including ELISAs, protein quantification, cell viability studies and microbial growth monitoring. Announced on 2 September 2026 from Waltham, Massachusetts, the launch extends Thermo Fisher’s absorbance microplate reader portfolio with a dedicated absorbance solution tailored for academic, biotech, pharmaceutical and quality control laboratories running routine workflows.
The Multiskan Ease supports a broad range of applications including protein quantification, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), cell viability studies, enzyme activity analysis, endotoxin testing and microbial growth monitoring. The system is positioned as a focused absorbance-based measurement platform, differentiated from more complex multimode microplate readers that support fluorescence, luminescence and other detection technologies. Thermo Fisher designed the instrument for laboratories requiring dependable absorbance performance without the added complexity of multimodal capabilities, targeting academic, biotech, pharmaceutical and quality control laboratories that focus on routine absorbance measurements. The instrument is intended for research use only, and is not authorised for diagnostic procedures.
Trent Colville, Senior Director and General Manager of Protein Detection and Quantification at Thermo Fisher Scientific, positioned the Multiskan Ease as delivering the performance required for routine biological analysis in a platform designed for easy adoption and straightforward operation. The launch responds to laboratory-level pressures around constrained budgets and shared instrumentation resources, targeting a segment where existing solutions may be either underpowered or overspecified for the workflow at hand. The Multiskan Ease extends Thermo Fisher’s dominant position in the microplate reader category, intensifying competitive pressure across BMG Labtech, PerkinElmer, Molecular Devices, BioTek (Agilent) and Tecan.
The commercial signal is a mid-tier microplate reader market where cost-conscious procurement is emerging as a key competitive vector, particularly across academic and QC laboratory settings. Focused, single-mode instrumentation targets a segment often overspecified by multimode platforms. Expect BMG Labtech, PerkinElmer, Molecular Devices, BioTek (Agilent) and Tecan to sharpen their positioning across the absorbance-only workflow segment through the rest of 2026 and 2027.
