Tyco Healthcare acquires surgical equipment company
Tyco Healthcare has said it has agreed to purchase Confluent Surgical.
Confluent Surgical’s board accepted the terms of the acquisition, which will involve the transaction of $245 million (134 million pounds). The companies expect the deal to be closed by the end of August.
Developing and supplying polymer-based surgical products, Confluent Surgical’s technology will be inherited by Tyco, including sprayable surgical sealants and anti-adhesion products. The sealant, approved for use in cranial surgery, is designed to limit leakage and reduce adhesions in various surgical techniques, improving patient outcomes.
Rich Meelia, Tyco Healthcare’s chief executive officer, remarked: “Confluent Surgical is an excellent strategic fit for Tyco Healthcare.”
“Confluent’s products and technology will be a welcomed addition to Tyco Healthcare’s extensive surgical portfolio,” he added.
Last year, Confluent Surgical had its DuraSeal Xact Sealant System approved for use in Europe as it was given a CE mark. The system is designed to provide surgeons with precise control of sealant procedures during spinal operations. The gel used in the sealant is coloured blue, to make it easy to see it has been applied correctly.
Europe was described as “an important market” for Confluent. Tyco Healthcare’s UK headquarters are based in Gosport in Hampshire. The company claims to employ 38,000 staff across almost every country in the world.
