UCB and Sanofi-Aventis announce availability of Xyzal

UCB and Sanofi-Aventis have announced the availability on prescription of Xyzal (levocetirizine dihydrochloride), an antihistamine indicated for the relief of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms and as a treatment of uncomplicated skin conditions arising from chronic idiopathic urticaria.

Following an application with the US Food and Drug Administration last July, the compound has since been investigated in a number of clinical trials which have shown it to reduce a range of symptoms, including sneezing and itchy eyes, while also lowering the number and size of wheals in chronic idiopathic urticaria patients.

Michael S Blaiss, clinical professor of paediatrics and medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Centre, said: “With allergies on the rise and longer-lasting allergy seasons, patients desire a fast and long-acting treatment.

“Xyzal is a new treatment option in today’s more challenging allergy environment.”

Brent Ragans, vice-president of speciality markets at Sanofi-Aventis, said that the availability of this compound would enable the firm continue in its leading position in this therapeutic area and highlights its ongoing dedication to improving treatment options for patients suffering from allergic conditions.

In December 2006, Schering-Plough announced the publication of data in the Drug Safety journal claiming that administration with Aerius/Neoclarityn (desloratadine) results in less patient drowsiness than treatment with Xyzal.
