UCB reports positive outcome for lacosamide

UCB has reported that a new phase III trial demonstrates a positive outcome for lacosamide in patients with diabetic neuropathic pain.

Study data has shown that the trial met its primary objective with sustained and statistically significant reductions observed in average daily pain scores.

The trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of lacosamide 400mg in 551 patients with diabetic neuropathic pain in two different titration schemes.

The first was a standard titration regimen in which patients reached their target dose at day 22 while the second was a fast titration in which the target dose was reached on day eight.

Iris Loew-Friedrich, global head of development at UCB Group, confirmed: “These new results add to the data from earlier clinical studies showing the benefit of lacosamide in this painful and common complication of diabetes.”

The company has stated that the trial results will support the dossiers filed for lacosamide in diabetic neuropathic pain which were submitted to the European and US regulatory authorities earlier this year.

Trial data will also be submitted for presentation at forthcoming international scientific meetings, UCB reports.

Earlier this month, UCB announced positive phase III clinical trial results for Keppra XR (levetiracetam), its extended release tablets for the treatment of epilepsy.
