UCB study shows benefits of early Neupro use for Parkinson’s disease
UCB has announced results from a post-hoc analysis of two phase III trials that provides evidence of the benefits of using Neupro as an early treatment intervention for Parkinson's disease.
The research investigated the impact of six-month earlier versus postponed initiation of Neupro rotigotine transdermal patch therapy in patients with early-stage Parkinson's disease with mild symptom severity.
It was indicated that a six-month earlier initiation of rotigotine may be associated with greater long-term benefits, while postponing treatment may result in loss of functional ability that cannot be regained.
Professor Lars Timmermann, from the department of neurology at the University Hospital Cologne, said: "Considering earlier rotigotine treatment initiation in patients with minimal or no functional disability or impairment may improve the patient journey."
Neupro is approved in the EU for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of early-stage idiopathic Parkinson's disease both as a monotherapy or in combination with levodopa.
It has also been ratified for the symptomatic treatment of moderate to severe idiopathic restless legs syndrome in adults.
