UK asthma sufferers ‘failing to receive basic care’

Many asthma patients in the UK are not receiving the necessary care to effectively manage the condition, a new report has warned.

According to figures from Asthma UK, two-thirds of the 5.4 million people living with asthma in the UK do not have access to basic care, with 27 per cent of the 4,650 people surveyed by the charity missing at least a week of work or education per year as a result of the condition.

Seven out of ten asthmatic people who are hospitalised do not get a follow-up appointment with a GP or nurse, while two-thirds of those who pay for prescriptions for asthma treatment say this affects their ability to pay for other things.

Under half (42 per cent) of respondents were given an asthma action plan in 2016 – although this figure is up from 36 per cent in 2015.

Chief executive of Asthma UK Kay Boycott called for a "bold, new approach" to tackle the issue.

"Digital asthma action plans, smart inhalers and automated GP alerts are just some of the ways asthma care could be brought up to date," she noted.
