UK Bluetongue BTV-3 Cases Top 200 as NFU Pushes Vaccines

The UK’s National Farmers’ Union (NFU) is urging livestock farmers across England and Wales to vaccinate against bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3), as confirmed cases have topped 200 for the current vector season and continue to accelerate. Announced on 8 August 2026, the warning follows a further 31 confirmed cases in England on 6 August alone, with the South West of England, particularly Devon and Cornwall, emerging as clusters.

Bluetongue is spread between livestock by biting midges (Culicoides species), typically active between April and November, with hot, dry summer weather creating favourable vector conditions and accelerating case counts. Chief veterinary officers from England, Wales and Scotland urged livestock keepers earlier this week to consult their vets, vaccinate their animals and promptly report suspected infections. UK Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss framed vaccination as the only effective route to control BTV-3, with vaccine costs sitting around £2.50 to £3 per dose. Middlemiss also directly addressed misinformation circulating about vaccine safety, confirming that vaccination does not cause infertility in sheep or cattle, while noting that the virus itself can cause reproductive problems through temperature spikes.

Clare Wise, NFU Acting Livestock Board Chair, described BTV-3 as a serious and growing threat to the UK livestock sector. Beyond direct animal health impact, bluetongue disrupts livestock movements and trade, creating significant financial and operational pressure on farm businesses. Alongside vaccination, farmers are moving higher-risk animals from wet, low-lying areas and housing vulnerable livestock during peak midge activity. The NFU welcomed vaccine manufacturers’ recent efforts to increase supply.

The commercial signal is a rapidly heating UK ruminant vaccine market as BTV-3 expands across new geographic areas. Manufacturers with established BTV-3 vaccines including Boehringer Ingelheim (BULTAVO 3), MSD Animal Health (BLUEVAC-3) and Ceva (Syvazul BTV 3) are well-positioned to capture increased demand, while related bluetongue trade restrictions add pressure across the wider UK livestock and animal health industry.
