UK declared BSE negligible risk by WOAH
The UK’s livestock industry has reached a significant milestone as the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reclassifies the nation’s Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) status from ‘controlled’ to ‘negligible risk.’ This shift comes after an extensive campaign by NFU Cymru and other stakeholders, affirming the effectiveness of UK’s robust controls and surveillance systems. The reclassification is poised to enhance international confidence in British beef, offering new market opportunities and streamlining processes.
The decision by WOAH marks a turning point for the UK beef industry, highlighting years of diligent efforts by industry leaders and the government to overcome the challenges posed by BSE. Last year’s application to WOAH by Defra was a calculated move to reflect improved safety protocols and low incidence rates of BSE in England and Wales. For farmers and producers, the negligible risk status means reduced processing costs and the potential to fully capitalise on carcass value. Importantly, it enhances the global perception of Welsh and British beef, which is known for its quality, potentially opening new doors in international markets, particularly as demand grows both domestically and abroad.
