UK employers ‘failing to provide proper support for migraine sufferers’

British businesses are failing to provide proper support for employees who suffer from migraines, according to a new report.

The Migraine Trust, Migraine Action and the National Migraine Centre have conducted a YouGov survey showing that 64 percent of UK adults believe employers do not understand much or at all about the nature of migraine and its effects on staff.

This is a problematic trend, as many migraine sufferers have complained about inadequate backing from bosses, with earlier research showing that almost one in five migraine sufferers have lost a job as a result of the condition.

Moreover, the survey revealed that 70 percent of people are either unsure or do not know whether migraine can be classed as a disability, while 21 percent believe that even health professionals do not recognise the characteristics and impact of the condition.

Arlene Wilkie, chief executive at the Migraine Trust, said: "This YouGov poll signals a wakeup call with the reality that while migraine appears to have touched the majority of people polled, the very debilitating and serious nature of the condition is still not recognised."
