UK Government pledge a fast track doctor scheme for pharmacists

Since departing the EU, the UK government have pledged to employ an additional six-thousand GPs into the NHS by 2025. In an aim to support this, they have proposed a fast track scheme for both pharmacists and paramedics where they can retrain as doctors; thus, eliminating the process of completing five-thousand and five hundred hours of training over five years minimum, set by the EU.

Chair of the British Medical Association council, Chaand Nagpaul, stated: “We believe that training doctors in less time than we do now will compromise their education and reduce the quality and comprehensiveness of patient care,”

Health and social care secretary, Matt Hancock, stated: “Without being bound by EU regulations we can focus on ensuring our workforce has the necessary training which is best suited to them and their experience, without ever compromising on our high standards of care or patient safety. The plans we are setting out today mean that we can retrain healthcare workers and get them back to the frontline faster.”
