Ultromics receive £10m investment to improve diagnosis of coronary heart disease.
Images created by echocardiograms are assessed by cardiologists to ascertain whether there are signs of heart disease. However this is only correct about 80% of the time which can lead to misdiagnosis. Ultromics is developing Topological Analysis technology to detect signs of coronary heart disease with a view to improving diagnostic accuracy dramatically. Heart disease is the world’s biggest killer, and this technology is already being trialled in six NHS hospitals.
Ross Upton, CEO and co-founder of Ultromics said: “We use thousands of measurements, and combine them with machine learning, to be able to predict patient outcomes. Our work ties directly in to that mission statement, it is using AI to help diagnose patients and create better patient outcomes. Just by using [the technology] we can stop patients being referred for surgery unnecessarily, and we can stop patients being sent home with coronary heart disease”.
The investment, which the company will use to market the technology in the US, and make it available in the UK in early 2019, was led by Oxford Sciences Innovation (OSI), alongside Neptune, RT Ventures, GT Healthcare, Tanarra, Fushia, and personal investors Andre Crawford-Brunt and Dieter Spälti.
