Unilever joins project to support farming communities in Madagascar

Unilever has announced its participation in a new project to help improve the livelihoods of vanilla farming communities in the Sava region of Madagascar.

The company will ally with the vanilla supplier Symrise and Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to support the project, which is spearheaded by Save the Children and funded by the German government.

Spanning three years, the collaboration will provide direct support to farmers and the wider community to improve their livelihoods, build more inclusive communities and provide better opportunities for future generations.

The aim is to reach 50,000 people in 10,000 households across 70 villages, with an estimated 70 percent of people in these communities currently living below the poverty line with highly unstable incomes.

Dhaval Buch, chief procurement officer at Unilever, said: "Working together, and using the strength and expertise of each partner, is essential if we are to achieve the level of transformative change that is necessary across the industry."

This will build on the work Unilever, Symrise and GIZ have been doing to support vanilla farmers since 2013, during which time they have trained nearly 3,000 farmers to increase their productivity and crop diversity.
