Unilever reports positive progress in first quarter of 2012

4th May 2012

Unilever has reported strong growth during the first quarter of 2012, achieved despite challenging conditions worldwide.

The consumer products conglomerate saw its turnover increase by 11.9 percent year on year during the period to 12.1 billion euros (9.84 billion pounds), with all categories contributing to growth.

An underlying sales increase of 11.9 percent was observed in emerging markets, exceeding the 4.2 percent rate seen in developed nations, with many products and divisions experiencing above-market growth.

Meanwhile, sales volumes rose by 3.5 percent and pricing increased by 4.5 percent, allowing the company to increase its quarterly dividend by eight percent.

Unilever chief executive officer Paul Polman said: "Our performance is pleasing given struggling economies, continued fragile consumer confidence and competitor activity."

Last week, the company announced progress on a number of key elements of its 2010 Sustainable Living Plan, highlighting its success on issues such as sustainable palm oil procurement, renewable energy use and safe water provision.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801357324-ADNFCR
