Standing alongside veterinarians, the Oregon State Government has cautioned dog owners of an illness that targets the lungs. They have also administered guidance on mitigation strategies.

Over 200 cases of the illness—which is identified as a persistent cough or pneumonia that is resistant to treatment – Have been reported since the end of summer.

Veterinarians have described the illness as “atypical canine infectious respiratory disease” and plans have been put in place by the state to begin assessing the onset of the illness.

Dog owners have been advised to seek help if they notice lack of energy or cold and flu symptoms in their pets. Moreover, up-to-date immunizations and fewer interactions with other dogs can help reduce the illness’s spread.

The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association added, “Just like with other respiratory pathogens, the more contacts your dog has, the greater the risk of encountering a dog that’s infectious.”
